When should you see a pulmonologist?

A pulmonologist specialises in the lungs and breathing. Your family doctor handles most everyday coughs and colds, but some symptoms are worth a specialist's opinion.

See a chest specialist if you have

  • A cough lasting more than three weeks, or coughing up blood
  • Breathlessness that is new, worsening, or limits daily activity
  • Wheezing or repeated chest infections
  • Asthma or COPD that is not well controlled
  • An abnormal chest X-ray or CT scan
  • Loud snoring with daytime sleepiness
