How to use your inhaler correctly

An inhaler only works if the medicine reaches your lungs. Many people with asthma or COPD get far less benefit than they should simply because of technique.

Metered-dose inhaler (with a spacer)

  • Shake the inhaler and attach it to the spacer.
  • Breathe out gently, away from the spacer.
  • Press once, then breathe in slowly and deeply.
  • Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then breathe out.
  • Wait about 30 seconds before a second puff.

Common mistakes

  • Breathing in too fast
  • Not holding the breath afterwards
  • Forgetting to rinse your mouth after steroid inhalers
