Asthma vs COPD: how to tell the difference

Asthma and COPD both cause breathlessness, cough and wheeze, so they are easy to confuse. The difference matters because treatment and outlook are not the same.

Asthma

Usually begins earlier in life, often with allergies. Symptoms come and go, are frequently triggered by allergens, cold air or exercise, and airflow is largely reversible with the right inhaler.

COPD

Usually appears later, most often after years of smoking or smoke exposure. Breathlessness is more persistent and progresses slowly; airflow limitation is only partly reversible.

Why the right diagnosis matters

A simple lung-function test (spirometry) helps separate the two. The correct diagnosis guides which inhalers you need and how to prevent flare-ups.

If you have ongoing breathing symptoms, see a chest specialist. Book an appointment.
